Lone star ticks are showing up in very small numbers in NH and ME and most likely are transients not residents, although entomologists think it's a matter of time until these more aggressive ticks become established in northern NE. They don't carry lyme but do transmit other nasty stuff (e.g., Rocky Mtn SF), and their bites are more painful. I've seen a ton of the big wood or dog ticks this year, more than ever before. They don't carry lyme either. As for the advice to "tuck your pants in your socks," that's fine, but it doesn't do diddly squat about all the ticks that drop off trees onto your head or brush off onto your clothing. Has anyone seen lone star ticks up here?

Lone Star Ticks

I have seen them in NJ- in the Pine Barrens.

Also- I recently read or heard a news report saying that they are spreading into NY

I found one (on my leg) last summer at Bearsden in Athol, MA. I could barely believe what I was seeing because I had just studied up on them after having dug an embedded female deer tick off me a week earlier. Yuck!
