Hi,

I'm curious if anyone knows if Sawyer River Road is closed due to washout, or due to the fact that the beginning is in such close proximity to the bridge that has Rt 302 closed down?

Thanks,
Karl

Sorry, I had the sources screwed up. I've looked at so many reports today, I'm getting screwed up!

The forest service says Bear Notch Road is open

http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/conditions/roads_status.php

They also have Big Rock campground open, so the Kanc is presumably open that far from the west.

The Governor's office has the Kanc closed from Lincoln to Bear Notch Road.

Somewhere else, that I can't find again, also said that the Kanc was open from Bear Notch Road to Conway.

Just posted on the White Mountains New Hampshire Facebook Page:

For information about campgrounds and trail conditions in the national forest, please be sure to check this webpage or call 603-536-6100 for the latest information ...

The Kanc is open to the Discovery Trail (past Lincoln Woods) from the Lincoln side and from Route 16 to Bear Notch Road from Conway. The goal to open the entire length of the Kanc is Sept. 15.

Bear Notch Road to Barlett is open, but work is continuing in Crawford Notch. Our road crews are working hard to make repairs. Please call us at 800-FIND-MTS for up to the minute information and suggestions for where you'd like to go. Also, the Highland Games are still on!

CONCORD – Most major routes are open and visitors will be able to reach their destinations for the Labor Day Weekend, said Governor John Lynch.

State transportation workers have been out across the state since the end of the storm. As of this morning, all but parts of seven state roads were open. DOT employees are repairing those roads or establishing detours and alternate routes where necessary.

“Visitors should know that they will be able to reach their New Hampshire destinations this Labor Day weekend,” Governor Lynch said. “The forecast is for a great weekend, and we invite out-of-state visitors and our own residents to explore all that New Hampshire has to offer this weekend.”

Visitors can get information about road conditions and road closures by calling 2-1-1 or on line at http://www.nh.gov/dot/511/index.htm.

DOT officials have worked with local officials to establish a detour to allow access to Route 49 and Waterville Valley and Thornton.

DOT is working to establish pedestrian access to Route 302 for residents of Hart’s Location. Drivers can travel on 302 in both directions, but will not be able to cross through the Sawyer’s River Bridge area.

The Kancamagus Highway is closed from Lincoln to Bear Notch Road, but DOT officials expect that sufficient repairs will be completed in time to re-open the road for fall foliage season.

I wonder if the Kanc is walkable past Big Rock Campground, say to the East Pond Trail. Anyone know?

Does anyone know about this pedestrian access for 302? I assume it is over the Sawyer’s River Bridge?

I'm mostly curious because I signed up for Crank the Crawford (a bike race) on the 10th and I'd be bummed if it gets canceled.

On the other hand, if I don't race that day, I guess the hiking trails will be a little less crowded. :)

Actually, I'll bet it's by walking over the Fourth Iron railroad bridge. That was the technique offered to rescue those trapped between the 302 washouts. They chose to wait it out at the Notchland Inn because without their cars they couldn't get anywhere.

Biking on the Kanc?

Also, I wonder if you can go by bike? It would be really nice to bike up there without having to worry about cars. I'd guess the answer is "no," because if there is repair work going on, we would just be in the way.
