Every January at work we have to list our goals for the year. It's dreadful. One year someone in my department wrote "26 paychecks" as one of his goals (we get payed every two weeks).

Work stinks, but hiking is fun. So how about hiking goals for 2011.

My general feeling is that if I meet all my goals, then I didn't set them high enough.

1) chop at least 1 hour off my last (only) Presi Traverse
2) chop at least 1.5 hours off my last (only) Pemi Loop
3) linger, dawdle, explore, and in general happily waste time on the trail and off-trail whenever time and circumstances allow it.
4) study and practice photography more
5) more backpacking in off-trail undesignated spots
6) invite my girlfriend to hike with me on days when my wife is working

1. Finish my winter 46 in the Adirondacks.
2. Add as many lean-tos as possible to the list of lean-tos I've spent a night in... (currently at 95, I should have a party or something for #100)
3. Finish both the fire tower challenge and the Catskill high peaks at the same time on Balsam Lake Mountain

Almost finish the winter 4Ks with Alex.

Do Cannon and Field in winter with Sage (at her request), plus anything else she wants to do.

Highpoint NY and ME with the girls...maybe we'll do CO and Hawaii too, we'll see.

Get our Border Terrier puppy on the 4K trails (he should be ready by summer, he's too young now).

Working towards my 111:
-all 5 VT
-both in Catskills
-at least 3 trips to the Whites

Thru-hike the N/P trail

Pick up a dSLR to improve photos

Visit cousin out near Shasta for some westcoast hiking :D

Improve my overall hiking conditioning...longer, faster, easier

Finish the NH 48 (hancocks, madison & owl's head are left).

Eat more cajun burgers at the Moat in N. Conway.

Explore at least 20 new swimming holes and waterfalls.

Backpack in Baxter. Visit all the waterfalls near Russell Pond.

Climb some ME 4K's.

Finish the VT 4K's.

Rollerblade the entire 52-mile Cape Cod Rail trail in 1 day.

Hike in Lynn Woods. A lot.

Attend Pat & Audrey's potluck in the fall.

Be as green as possible.

Meet more new & fun outdoorsy-ish people.

Blow my tax refund on gear.

I'm finding a lot less free time for hiking so I'll try to keep my goals realtively short for this year.

1. Complete at least 12 of my remaining 24 NH4k winter peaks.
2. Climb Mt. Hood this June.
3. Complete my redlining of the Pemi region.
4. Do at least one significant (90 mile) plus backpack trip this year.

I love these first of the year threads.

Yeah, these threads are fun...

- Complete the W48 with a trip to West Bond and get going on round 2...
- Do new fun hikes with my 3YO daughter.
- Do a few more group hikes.
- Get out early and often in for trail maintenance on Ammo Ravine.
- Complete round 3 of the NH48.
- Enjoy the moment.
- Respect the mountains.
- Stay healthy, get stronger, go farther.

Yeah, I agree, get the lower back healthy again, as being on the shelf for over two months stinks. :( Everyone on this site who writes about overcoming health issues inspires me. :)

I enjoy reading everyone's replies to this list each year!
I haven't really thought about this yet this year, but here goes:
  • hike with my kids more
  • get some Maine hiking in
  • train to finish my W48 next winter with a Presi traverse and a Zealand/Bonds traverse next winter:)
  • learn more about natural communities
  • learn more birds/calls/songs
  • get closer to finishing NE67 and NEHH
  • explore more off trail on Moosilauke
  • go on a couple more Trailwrights work trips

-Stay relatively injury free
-camp out 1 night intentionally ;0
-finish grid, finish NE67, do more NHHH, do more redlining, do a pemi-loop, ski the pemi traverse...
-keep a better journal
-savor the journey and be more "in the moment"!!!!
